Showcasing work by:
Chung Hyon Kim - My works are about the social abjection and masculinity embodied in our society. I came across that the concept of masculinity has changed and also male figure cannot be naturally authorised as it used to be. The figure of my sculpture inspired from contemporary bodybuilding with over-grown body, and it is often considered as a freak show. I focused on this de-sublimation of the concept and artificially grown body. I used many different techniques and materials, showing irony and contrast between classicism and contemporary.
Jungmei He - ‘Life’ is my work’s theme. A tree which is born from seed, and passes through youth maturity, and old age to death, is like the very mirror of man. Evergreen trees provided the most fertile symbolism, for even in the cruelest of winter they never submit to adversity. For my works, I used a kind of Chinese traditional painting skills with strong, undulating lines to define the trees bark, broad sweeping gestures for the swirling mist, and splatters of ink to indicate explosions of energy. It focus on this rich symbolic vein, old trees knotty and bent, manifest a particular kind of beauty-wild, untamed, unprocessed - that has long been prized by Chinese aesthetes.
Junchi Xu - I am a second year student from Wimbledon College of Arts. I use oil paints and acrylic and paint on canvas. Recently my works focus on rock stars. I am pretty interested in shiny lights on stage and dynamic moment of stars. I take inspiration from photographs. I tend to express the power and mysterious of music. I hope viewers can feel the passion and acid of music through my painting.
Sungmi Shin - I like trees because they are similar to human. I painted many times to make the smooth surfaces and layered applicants of paints. It means that is the time to grow layers like annual rings of trees. I hope that my works, I and the people that watch my paintings become to be strong trees that have deep roots.
Jung Min Lee - Vivid colour is basically considered bright emotion. However, when something is obsessed too much, it is repulsed by itself. I have been thinking about using those vivid colours and how it can be well represented to give repulsion and disgust. Those ironic changing of emotions are perhaps our unchanged personality.
